Dentist vs Orthodontist

Dentist vs Orthodontist

What’s the Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?

Dentists and orthodontists both play important roles in maintaining oral health, but they differ in focus and training.

Dentists

Oral Health Care

Dentists are your primary provider for general dental care — including check-ups, fillings, cleans, and preventive treatment. They’re trained to manage a broad range of dental issues and help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Some dentists also provide orthodontic care

Orthodontists

Specialists in Tooth and Jaw Alignment

Orthodontists are dentists who have completed an additional three years of full-time specialist training focused solely on facial growth, bite correction, and the biomechanics of tooth movement.
This enables them to diagnose and treat complex problems related to crowding, spacing, bite discrepancies, and jaw position.
At Orthodontics Exclusively, all of our partners are registered specialists with decades of experience in specialist-level orthodontic care. We focus exclusively on orthodontics — and we are proud to hold teaching appointments at The University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University, helping to train the next generation of orthodontists.

Collaborative Care

Patients often see both a general dentist and an orthodontist. While your dentist looks after your overall oral health, your orthodontist ensures your teeth and jaws are aligned in a way that promotes function, comfort, and long-term
